    What Is Spacesynth?

Spacesynth is a subgenre of electronic music characterized by its futuristic soundscapes, synthesizer-driven melodies, and space-inspired aesthetics. It’s often instrumental, although occasional vocal elements or robotic voices are used to enhance its narrative. The music evokes visions of intergalactic exploration, science fiction adventures, and the limitless possibilities of space.

    The Origins of Spacesynth

Spacesynth traces its roots to Italo disco and synthwave. In the late 1970s, electronic music pioneers began experimenting with synthesizers to create dynamic, otherworldly sounds. The genre gained prominence in the early 1980s, thanks to artists like Laserdance, Koto, and Hypnosis, who popularized its signature style.

Much of the early spacesynth music was influenced by the burgeoning science fiction culture of the time, including movies like Star Wars and Blade Runner, as well as TV shows like Star Trek. The futuristic optimism and technological fascination of the era became central themes in the music.

    Key Characteristics of Spacesynth

Spacesynth is defined by several hallmark features:
    1. Synth-Driven Soundscapes: Analog synthesizers like the Roland Juno, Yamaha DX7, and Minimoog are the backbone of the genre, producing rich, melodic textures.
    2. Cosmic Themes: The music often incorporates space-inspired motifs such as stars, galaxies, and interstellar travel. Song titles like “Cosmic Voyager” or “Starchaser” evoke a sense of adventure.
    3. Pulsing Rhythms: Energetic and consistent beats, usually in a 4/4 time signature, provide a driving force for the music.
    4. Melodic Layers: Spacesynth relies heavily on multi-layered melodies that intertwine to create a lush, cinematic feel.
    5. Emotion and Nostalgia: Despite its futuristic focus, spacesynth often conveys a nostalgic longing for an imagined future—a hallmark of retrofuturism.

    Spacesynth and Its Cultural Impact

Spacesynth was more than just a musical genre; it represented an optimistic vision of the future during a time when technology and space exploration were rapidly advancing. It played a significant role in shaping the aesthetic of 1980s electronic music, inspiring artists in other genres and influencing later movements like synthwave and outrun music.

In recent years, spacesynth has enjoyed a revival, with both classic and contemporary artists keeping the genre alive. Labels such as Spacesound Records and new artists like Dreamtime and Electron Avenue have continued to push the boundaries of the genre while honoring its retro roots.

    Cosmic Force - Future Mind

We are very proud to present the first album released on the Synthance label!

Cosmic Force is a collaboration between Chris Van Buren and Grigoris Panagiotidis. After a successful collaboration on single tracks for Space Holidays and ZYX Records they decided to produce an entire album. The album brings some surprising combinations of the Neospace and Moondance styles which work very well together.
